From ancient dreams to modern miracles, Israel continues to inspire Jewish communities around the world. With Yom Ha'atzmaut – Israel’s Independence Day – approaching on Monday, May 5 through Tuesday, May 6, Israelis and Diaspora Jews will celebrate 77 years since the country’s founding.

 

“In 1948, a dream became a reality with the establishment of the State of Israel. And with that came a success story of an indigenous people returning to their homeland,” said Michael Balaban, CEO and president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. “During these tumultuous times of war and hostages still being held captive, it is more important than ever to remember and honor what we are fighting for: our ancestral home, a land that provides safety for the Jewish people and for individuals of all backgrounds and faiths, and a country that has accomplished exceptional feats for the world over its short time in modern existence.” 

 

In honor of Israel’s 77 years of resilience, innovation and hope, the Jewish Federation is hosting and supporting various festivities and programs for the community to participate in: 

 

Yom Ha’atzmaut Concert & Celebration
Sunday, May 4 | 1 - 5:30 p.m.

Kaiserman JCC

Wish Israel a happy birthday with a community-wide celebration! Enjoy kosher Israeli BBQ, games for all ages, and a performance by the Hashayara Project, an ensemble of Israeli musicians from the Galilee that blends traditional favorites with contemporary Israeli hits. Before the concert, experience the unveiling of the new statue “Tree of Life” by Eyal Assulin at the JCC. Commissioned by the Jewish Federation’s Partnership2Gether program, this piece is dedicated to remember those who were killed on and since Oct. 7, 2023 in Netivot and Sdot Negev. The statue stands as a proud testament to the deep roots connecting Greater Philadelphia and its partnership regions in the south of Israel. To register, click here. 

 

Special Briefing with Times of Israel Founder

Commemorate 77 years since Israel’s founding by staying informed on what is happening today! Join the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council for a briefing with David Horovitz, founding editor of the online newspaper The Times of Israel. With ceasefire and hostage negotiations at a critical juncture once again, Horovitz will offer insight into the future of the Israeli government, its leadership and the public. The Chevra Social Club

The Jewish Federation’s NextGen is teaming up with The Chevra and other Jewish organizations for a night of three epic-themed parties in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut and Lag B'omer.
