Happy Chanukah! Here are 8 ways to celebrate with your family, one for each night. And no matter how you spell it (Chanukah, Hannukah, Channukah), we hope you have an amazing Festival of Lights.
NIGHT ONE: MAKE A FESTIVE DRINK
Craving a cocktail? Try a Spinning Dreidel!
Ingredients:
2 parts Bourbon
1 part Pomegranate Juice
1 tablespoon Fig Preserve
1 bar spoon Fresh Lemon Juice
2 dashes Aromatic Bitters
Preparation:
1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well.
2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
3. Garnish with a lemon peel.
NIGHT TWO: LISTEN TO THE JEWISH PHILLY PODCAST
Give yourself the gift of something interesting to listen to on your commute. Our podcast has in-depth interviews with some of the most interesting people in Philadelphia, like Zahav chef Michael Solomonov, former governor Ed Rendell, and best-selling author Jennifer Weiner.
Watch our podcast trailer and check out all the episodes here!
NIGHT THREE: EAT CHINESE FOOD
Celebrate Christmas Day with a time-honored Jewish tradition: Chinese takeout. And while you nosh, check out this read from our newsletter about the origin of this seemingly ubiquitous food tradition.
NIGHT FOUR: PLAY DREIDEL
Check out a new spin on the game of dreidel with this origami version.
NIGHT FIVE: DO YOGA
Work up an appetite for latkes and sufganiyot with this Chanukah-themed yoga sequence. Each move corresponds to a different part of the story of the Maccabee’s triumph over the Greeks.
NIGHT SIX: READ A BOOK
Our friends at PJ Library have Jewish-themed books for all holidays, occasions, and reading levels. Check out their list of Chanukah books and read one with the young person in your life.
NIGHT SEVEN: MAKE LATKES
Honor night seven by giving traditional latkes a cruciferous kick. We whipped up this Brussel Sprout latke recipe from Food Network’s Molly Yeh and think they’re just as good as the potato-based version—plus, marginally healthier.
NIGHT EIGHT: DONATE
Finish out the holiday by making a donation to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. Whether it’s fighting hunger, helping our seniors, fostering the next generation of Jewish leaders, or building bridges with our brothers and sisters in Israel, we can’t do it without your support.
