Guest Opinion: Jewish new year begins, so does season of harvest

The end of summer and the beginning of autumn is a special time for my family. For Jewish communities across the globe, it’s a time for both celebration of a new Hebrew calendar year and a time for repentance and self-reflection, while on my farm here in Upper Makefield, it means it’s almost time for the hard work of the harvest to begin.

For me, the harvest and Judaism are inextricably linked. Our farm produces a variety of crops, including corn, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers, which are then donated to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Mitzvah Food Project. These crops help our communities’ most vulnerable members provide fresh and healthy meals for their families.
