Join Global Citizen for the 28th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the nation. Started in Philadelphia in 1996, it is a nationwide movement that breaks down barriers and fosters understanding about the legacy of Dr. King, particularly among young people.
JCRC will be participating in the following two events:
Chew Recreation Center's "Renew & Protect"
Monday, January 16, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Volunteers will refresh the Chew Recreation Center center by removing weeds and debris, paint exterior/interior walls, and protect the greens by covering soil in hopes of producing vibrant reflections of hope and inspiration to our community in Spring 2023. Day of Service in Wissahickon Valley Park
Monday, January 16 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
This year, participate in a clean-up beneath and around the recently re-opened bridges that connect Forbidden Drive to the paved bike path. Removing this litter will not only make this area of the park more beautiful, but it will keep our watershed healthier for all! Then They Came For Me: The Legacy of Martin Niemöller

Niemöller's quote is iconic, but much less is known about the individual behind it. Join the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation and JCRC for a presentation by Professor Matthew Hockenos and conversation about Niemöller's complex life.
Professor Hockenos is the Harriet Johnson Toadvine ’56 Professor in
20th Century History at Skidmore College. His research has focused on the German Protestant Church and how it has negotiated the frequent and dramatic upheavals of the 20th Century. Hockenos is a member of the USHMM’s Committee on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust. To register, click here.
"I Remember"

The memory of the Holocaust is facing a serious challenge as it must remain both relevant and personal, so that the younger generations will keep it alive. Adi Rabinowitz Bedein will discuss the idea of memory, and show what and how we can learn from the Holocaust. It is expressed in a manner that is personal and meaningful, so we can become better individuals who are active against the wrongs in our world. Bedein is a Holocaust educator from Israel, an International lecturer, and a VIP tour guide in Yad Vashem. Adi has a BA in Education and Political Science and a Masters in Democracy Studies.
