Local Philanthropist Helps Ethiopian Jews

After returning home from a delegation trip accompanying olim (immigrants) to Israel as part of Operation Zur Israel, local philanthropist and Jewish Federation Board Member Michael Markman felt compelled to do more for Jewish Ethiopians.

Motivated, Michael appealed to members of the Jewish Federation Real Estate (JFRE) Executive Committee for personal donations. At the same time, he also sought a grant from the JFRE Fund to build a medical clinic in Gondar to provide health care to those living in unsanitary conditions and dying from treatable diseases.

With a grant from the JFRE Fund and additional dollars raised by the JFRE Executive Committee, JFRE was able to allocate almost $160,000 to create this much-needed clinic.

Working in partnership with Struggle to Save Ethiopian Jewry (SSEJ), a nonprofit organization that provides medical assistance and educational programs to Ethiopian Jews, the clinic will provide Jewish children between the ages of five and ten health care as well as women who are pregnant or nursing.
