For generations, summer camp has been a treasured Jewish tradition: one where kids can unwind, enjoy the sunshine and create lasting memories.

As campers experience Shabbat dinners, learn about Jewish values, and form connections to Israel and each other, they often find a sense of belonging, away from the realities of antisemitism they may encounter in school or in everyday life.

In looking to build up a strong next generation, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia prioritizes investing in these camp experiences and making sure that they are safe as well as affordable for all.

Through need-based scholarships, One Happy Camper grants — which provide up to $1,000 to children attending Jewish overnight camp for the first time — and security trainings in partnership with the Secure Community Network (SCN), the Jewish Federation works to lower financial barriers that may prevent families from sending their kids to day or overnight camp while providing them with a safe space.

“Jewish summer camp was a life-changing experience for me and played a significant role in shaping who I am today,” said the Jewish Federation’s Chief Development Officer Sarah B. Solomon. “The friendships, values, and sense of connection I developed at camp led to transformative experiences through Hillel and Birthright, and ultimately inspired my career in Jewish communal service. By investing in summer camp experiences, we are ensuring that every child has the opportunity to strengthen their connection to Jewish life and develop a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the summer months.”

This summer, the Jewish Federation provided $703,000 in scholarships for first-time campers through the One Happy Camper program and in need-based aid to 47 local Jewish day and overnight camps. Last year, the organization also provided security trainings for 1,400 staffers at 21 camps.

We spoke with several campers and parents who shared updates on their camp experiences and how financial support from the Jewish Federation has had a positive impact on their summer.

“Henry’s summer at Harlam was truly transformative! He arrived feeling shy and insecure, but the welcoming atmosphere quickly drew him in. The infectious enthusiasm of the counselors created a space where everyone felt seen and valued. Henry discovered he was funny and capable of connecting with others to create new bonds. “Our daughter was originally supposed to go to Israel for a few weeks. Unfortunately, because of the war, the plans needed to be cancelled. You can only imagine the disappointment for her.
