President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia

As we welcome in the start of a new year, I am returning to a resolution I made on Oct. 7: to fight for the release of all the hostages in Hamas’ captivity until each one is free.

This week, we heard from freed hostages describing the horrors they faced while in Gaza. Sapir Cohen shared the chilling details of her abduction from Kibbutz Nahal Oz; Mia Shem described the excruciating pain of her poorly treated injuries; Liat Atzili re-lived her terror in discovering her husband had been murdered upon her return from captivity.

While hearing these accounts is distressing, we must bear witness. We must remember each hostage still undergoing the unimaginable in Gaza. We must take strength from the bravery of these hostages and raise our own voices to advocate for the security and well-being of Israel and of Jewish communities across the United States.

On Jan. 30-31, the Jewish Federations of North America will organize an Advocacy Fly-In in Washington, D.C. As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with key decision-makers in Congress, our community will meet with legislators to advocate for support and funding for Israel, security at home in North America, and the fight against antisemitism.

Although we enter the new year with heavy hearts, we are determined for the Jewish community to be safe and thrive. It is inspiring to see so many activists of different faiths from across the region stand in solidarity with our community and this mission. I hope you will join me at the Jewish Federations of North America’s Shabbat of Love on Jan. 19 to spread light and hope as we begin 2024. You can learn more about our Advocacy Fly-In and the Shabbat of Love below.

In this new year, the Jewish Federation is expanding our efforts in securing our Jewish future, working with our community and our allies to make an impact. We are increasing our work in caring for those in need, combating antisemitism and strengthening Jewish identity. We are keeping the remaining hostages in our hearts and taking the necessary actions for their safe return.

We are never giving up hope.
