Michael Balaban President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia   As we welcome in the start of a new year, I am returning to a resolution I made on Oct. 7: to fight for the release of all the hostages in Hamas’ captivity until each one is free.   This week, we heard from freed hostages describing the horrors they faced while in Gaza. [Sapir Cohen](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1hc5tbrZtf/?igsh=NjN1NnZsYXN0eWhr&utm_campaign=FY24%20Attacks%20in%20Israel&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8cE7eXOoi2LSyZjVFx0rgXgqA3tfq9X729p6dZ9MZWMHeJIAeuBQjudEgw8YNu_KC2oV1p) shared the chilling details of her abduction from Kibbutz Nahal Oz; [Mia Shem](https://twitter.com/YaariCohen/status/1741694346225709111?utm_campaign=FY24%20Attacks%20in%20Israel&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8cE7eXOoi2LSyZjVFx0rgXgqA3tfq9X729p6dZ9MZWMHeJIAeuBQjudEgw8YNu_KC2oV1p) described the excruciating pain of her poorly treated injuries; [Liat Atzili](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1jkEXyolsy/?igsh=MXJjYmNwcnQ5ajFpbA%3D%3D&utm_campaign=FY24%20Attacks%20in%20Israel&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8cE7eXOoi2LSyZjVFx0rgXgqA3tfq9X729p6dZ9MZWMHeJIAeuBQjudEgw8YNu_KC2oV1p) re-lived her terror in discovering her husband had been murdered upon her return from captivity.   While hearing these accounts is distressing, we must bear witness. We must remember each hostage still undergoing the unimaginable in Gaza. We must take strength from the bravery of these hostages and raise our own voices to advocate for the security and well-being of Israel and of Jewish communities across the United States.   On Jan. 30-31, the Jewish Federations of North America will organize an [Advocacy Fly-In](https://form.jotform.com/233402863891965?utm_campaign=FY24%20Attacks%20in%20Israel&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8cE7eXOoi2LSyZjVFx0rgXgqA3tfq9X729p6dZ9MZWMHeJIAeuBQjudEgw8YNu_KC2oV1p) in Washington, D.C. As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with key decision-makers in Congress, our community will meet with legislators to advocate for support and funding for Israel, security at home in North America, and the fight against antisemitism.   Although we enter the new year with heavy hearts, we are determined for the Jewish community to be safe and thrive.
