Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia President and CEO
In moments of uncertainty, the strength of our community often reveals itself in simple but powerful ways.
For many years, the Islamic regime in Iran has contributed to instability across the region through its belligerence and threats against Israel and other U.S. allies, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In recent days, tensions in the region have escalated as Israel, the United States and international partners respond to missile attacks and threats from the Iranian regime.
This latest moment is a reminder that conflicts in the Middle East rarely remain distant for Jewish communities around the world.
While these developments are unfolding far from home, their impact is felt here as well. Across the United States, Jewish communities are experiencing a heightened security environment. In Greater Philadelphia, synagogues, day schools and community centers continue to take additional precautions to ensure the safety of students, families and staff. These steps are necessary, but they also remind us of the responsibility we share to protect Jewish life and institutions.
It is also important to say clearly: debate about international events is part of a healthy democracy. Jewish people themselves hold a wide range of views about developments in the Middle East. But when protests or rhetoric target Jewish people or Jewish institutions here in the United States, it crosses a line. Targeting Jews because of events overseas is antisemitism, and it must be called out wherever it appears.
At the same time, we refuse to allow fear or division to define this moment. Israel remains a vibrant society where millions of people continue building everyday lives — raising families, gathering for Shabbat dinners, celebrating Purim in bomb shelters and strengthening their communities. Here in Greater Philadelphia, Jewish life continues to flourish in classrooms, synagogues, community centers and homes.
Since the attacks of Oct. 7, we have witnessed something powerful: communities banding together in solidarity, compassion and shared purpose. Those same values guide us today.
To help our community stay informed during this rapidly evolving moment, we invite you to join a special briefing hosted by the Jewish Federations of North America.
Monday, March 9
1 p.m. ET
The program will feature Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, who will provide a timely update on the latest developments and share insight into the diplomatic and security landscape.
This briefing offers an opportunity to hear directly from one of Israel’s senior diplomatic representatives and better understand the broader regional context and what it may mean in the days ahead.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia remains in close contact with partners in Israel, national organizations and local leaders to monitor developments and ensure our community remains informed, supported and safe.
Even in challenging times, the Jewish story has always been one of resilience — not only enduring hardship, but continuing to live, gather and celebrate Jewish life together.
Thank you for being part of this community and for the many ways you help strengthen Jewish life here at home and around the world.
