While Jeff Zachem may be new to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s NextGen Board, he is no stranger to leadership positions within the Jewish community. In high school, he was actively involved in BBYO, which is supported by the Jewish Federation, serving in a number of roles to help connect teens with Judaism.
Driven by his youth movement leadership roots, Zachem, now 25, is continuing his community work with NextGen and as an active volunteer.
Professionally, Jeff is an Associate at JPMorgan Chase & Co. Whether in or out of the office, Zachem is committed to living his life through Jewish values.
NextGen spoke with Zachem to learn more about his leadership and Jewish journey.

What are three fun facts about you?
- I naturally have two colors of hair.
- I can say the alphabet backwards.
- I have visited 25 different professional baseball stadiums.
How did you first get involved with NextGen and the Jewish Federation?
My first Jewish Federation event was cleaning Har Nebo cemetery in October 2021. I had only moved to Philadelphia a couple months prior, and it was a great way to get involved in the community as well as give back to the city.
From there, I was a part of the 2022 Leadership Development Program (LDP). That allowed me to expand my circles and gain a better understanding of the opportunities the Jewish Federation offers young professionals to become involved.
Throughout your leadership journey in the Jewish Federation, what has been one of your most memorable experiences?
NextGen’s Jewish Relief Agency (JRA) Day this year has been my most memorable experience so far. It was a rewarding event that allowed me to help out those in the Jewish community who are less fortunate. Additionally, it is reaffirming to see others similar in age devote some of their day to help.
What is an organization, program or cause that the Jewish Federation supports that personally resonates with you?
A cause that resonates with me is BBYO. That was an organization I was very involved with in high school, and it afforded me several leadership opportunities. I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for BBYO, as I developed stronger leadership and social skills due to my involvement. Additionally, it strengthened my Jewish identity and motivated me to get involved in the Jewish community when I was in college. I believe the Jewish Federation's support of BBYO and other community organizations will allow those to benefit from the same experience I had.
Why do you give to the Jewish Federation?
I give to the Jewish Federation because it preserves the Jewish community and advances a sense of belonging for American Jews. For instance, when I first moved to Philadelphia, I got involved in several of the Jewish Federation funded organizations here, such as The Chevra and RSJ Moishe House. These involvements allowed me to make friends and feel a part of being in a new city.
Also, the Torah instructs that one should give at least 10% of their earnings to charity. To follow along with that directive, I believe it's important to give back to my community.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to get involved in NextGen?
I think LDP is a great starting point for one who is looking to participate in NextGen. Through the program, one can learn about the different committees that are being offered and meet new people as well.
